Lexington, Concord, and the Road To Revolution
Nov 11, 2014
The spring of 1775 was decisive in pushing the Thirteen Colonies from discord or open revolution. Walt Borneman's new book, AMERICAN SPRING: Lexington, Concord, and the Road to Revolution, peels back history's shorthand to debunk the myths of this time and show how quickly events moved even in the age of horseback and sail. |

Join us at Chipper's Lanes for the 5th Annual “Purple Pins for Polio” Event put on by the four Rotary Clubs in Fort Collins. This two hour bowling event has raised over $45,000 in support of Rotary International’s world-wide fight to eradicate polio. Since 1985, Rotary International has raised $1.2 billion to help reduce the number of cases of polio in the world from 350,000 annually in 1985, to fewer than 250 annually today. There remain three countries that have not stopped transmission of the disease; Afganistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. We are this close! Please have ONE person register per team, and give the $60 TEAM registration check to Dave Robinson. Contact Dave Robinson for more details. |

CONFIRMED - 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi
Feb 10, 2015
Mark Geist & John Tiegen were two of the 6 American security operators (former US military) who fought at the American Embassy and the CIA Anex during the terrorist attack on September 12, 2012.
They were involved in the writing of the book - "13 Hours - The Inside Account of What Happened In Benghazi". It is a harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi.
13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack.

Africian Elephants Decline & Ivory
Feb 24, 2015
The illicit wildlife trade of commercially valuable species has reached alarming levels globally, destroying populations and threatening species persistence. The ecologically and cognitively unique African elephant is increasingly the symbol of contemporary wildlife overutilization. Dr. Wittemeyer will discuss the origins of this role and the unique position this species harbors in the face of 21st century biodiversity reaping. As a primary driver of biodiversity decline, quantifying illegal harvest is essential for conservation but notoriously difficult. He will also discuss what is known about the current state of elephants, and steps needed to protect remaining elephant populations. |

Fort Collins - Staying Great! - Ballot Issue
Mar 17, 2015
Linda Hopkins will be presenting background information about the upcoming Ballot Issue #1. Voters are being to continue the current quarter-cent sales tax for a new group of community capital projects—no new taxes; no change to the current tax rate. The approach is used by Fort Collins (since 1973) to periodically ask voters if they want to to reinvest in the community. Linda will review the proposed projects and highlight why it is good for business as well as the general community |

Sprites and more
Mar 24, 2015
For over a century, people have been reporting they thought they saw strange, fleeting lights in the night sky above thunderstorms. And they were right!
But it was not until 1989 that one such flash was captured on video tape before the scientific study of red sprites could begin. And Colorado night skies are one of the best places in the world to watch for sprites, along with a entire “zoo” of other lightning-related creatures (blue jets, elves, halos, gigantic jets, pixies and gnomes.) Walt will review a quarter century of amazing observations, many obtained right from the eastern edge of Fort Collins.

How D-Day Almost Became a Disaster
Mar 31, 2015
Operation Overlord, the Allied landings in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944 — commonly called “D-Day” –– was the largest combined air-and-sea military operation in history. If successful, it would signal the beginning of the end for Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. If it failed, the course of history since that date would be remarkably different from what we know today. And the success of the operation did hang on a very slender thread. Denver author, magazine editor, and award-winning military historian Flint Whitlock will talk about how, despite years of planning and rehearsal, D-Day almost became a disaster for the Allies. Author and military historian Flint Whitlock graduated from the Army’s Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, in 1965 and spent five years on active duty, including a combat tour in Vietnam. He is the author of nine books, six of which are about World War II, and is currently the editor of WWII Quarterly. He has appeared in documentaries on the History Channel and on the television series War Stories with Oliver North. |

The history of "Doc Susie"
Apr 07, 2015
Cathy Naples will be in character talking about "Doc Susie". Dr. Susan Anderson, or "Doc Susie," is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable figures from Colorado's past. She arrived in Fraser in 1907, at the age of 37, thinking she would die within the year of the tuberculosis contracted while in medical school. Beloved Doc Susie remained in Fraser, practicing medicine, for nearly 50 years.
She was a graduate of the University of Michigan, and "authentic lady physician," licensed in both Colorado and Wyoming. She arrived at a time of tremendous growth and change in Fraser and Tabernash, having to prove herself first in treating an injured horse before the locals would allow her to treat their injuries and illnesses. She went on to treat all types of maladies and injuries suffered in work on the railroad, in the lumber camps, and on the local ranches, and to serve as coroner for the county during the tumultuous days of the construction of the Moffat Tunnel. While many times she doubted the wisdom of her decision to live and practice in Grand County, the community worked hard to make sure she was appreciated and cared for.
Doc Susie's home still stands in Fraser, and the Cozens Ranch Museum holds an exhibit of her tools and equipment. Her story is an inspiration to young women who seek a career in the medical fields. There are many in Fraser who still remember this remarkable woman, who lived and full and vital life right up to the age of 90.

Fort Collins City Climate Action Plan 2015 Update
Apr 21, 2015
Lucinda smith will update us on the recent update of the cities "Climate Action Plan". The Fort Collins City Council on March 3 unanimously adopted some of the most aggressive goals in the nation to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions: 20 percent below 2005 by 2020 and 80 percent by 2030, which would put the community on a path to be carbon neutral by 2050. Council adopted the goals after four work sessions, multiple public forums and nine months of work with a Citizen Advisory Committee that helped shape the overall 2015 Climate Action Plan Framework. The framework document features 11 strategies that speed up the City’s original 2008 goals to reduce emissions to 20 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.
