Africian Elephants Decline & Ivory

The illicit wildlife trade of commercially valuable species has reached alarming levels globally, destroying populations and threatening species persistence. The ecologically and cognitively unique African elephant is increasingly the symbol of contemporary wildlife overutilization. Dr. Wittemeyer will discuss the origins of this role and the unique position this species harbors in the face of 21st century biodiversity reaping. As a primary driver of biodiversity decline, quantifying illegal harvest is essential for conservation but notoriously difficult. He will also discuss what is known about the current state of elephants, and steps needed to protect remaining elephant populations.
